Optical properties of semiconductor nanowires

Postdoc position: Optical properties of semiconductor nanowires Amsterdam, 1009 DB, (Noord-Holland), 40 hours per weekFoundation for Fundamental Research on Matter
Job description ——————————————————————— ———–
Recently, a Center for Nanophotonics was established at the FOM- Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics in Amsterdam. In this Center, over 40 researchers work together in a joint nanophotonics research program. One of the Center’s groups is stationed at Philips Research at the High-Tech Campus in Eindhoven (The Netherlands). The research topic of this group is photonics of nanowires. The materials under study find their application in many different fields, ranging from quantum electronics and photonics to sensing. The joint AMOLF/Philips group focuses on the study of semiconductor nanowires as building blocks for nanoscale optoelectronic devices. This investigation is intended to obtain a better fundamental understanding of the optical properties of the nanowires and the factors that influence these properties (size, surface, structure, etc). The nanowires are grown by metal-catalysed synthesis and are characterized using different techniques (SEM, TEM, EDS). Their optical properties are studied with -photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence,ƒÝstate-of-the-art optical techniques ( time- resolved spectroscopy, etc). A key aspect of this research is to identify and demonstrate promising device applications, such as biophotonic sensors and light sources and detectors.

Ingnition of High Pressure Discharges - Technische Universit

PhD student: Ingnition of High Pressure Discharges Eindhoven, (Noord-Brabant), 40 hours per week Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
Job description ——————————————————————— ———–
The research project consists of an experimental as well as a theoretical/numerical part.
Measurements will be performed, using ultra-fast CCD cameras and lasers to determine the evolution of the discharge during the ignition phase. These state of the art diagnostics have been developed within the group EPG and will need to be implemented for measurements on high pressure discharges. The existing numerical plasma model provides a starting platform to model the discharge ignition. However, it will be necessary to upgrade this model to account for the specific nature of the discharge during the ignition phase. The work will be performed in the plasma physics group, which focuses on understanding basic phenomena in technologically important plasmas. This PhD-project will be part of a major research effort concerning the development of plasma-based energy efficient light sources. High intensity discharge (HID) lamps, used for street lighting, are efficient light sources compared to the commonly known halogen or fluorescent lamps. Since about 15-20% of the worldwide electricity consumption is used for lighting applications, the introduction of HID lamps in shops and offices could result in significant energy savings. However, it is not trivial to ignite these lamps as the physical mechanisms and processes governing high- pressure plasma ignition are not known.

(Info) IDRC Poverty and Economic Policy (PEP) Research Network Call for Proposal

Poverty and Economic Policy (PEP) Research Network Call for Proposal
http://www.idrc.ca/en/ev-104606-201-1-DO_TOPIC.html CA $20 000 grants for developing-country researchers studying poverty issues The Poverty and Economic Policy (PEP) Research Network invites researchers originating from and residing in developing countries to submit research proposals. The PEP network provides financial (roughly 15 CA $20 000 research grants per year) and scientific support to member researchers, as well as funding to participate in training workshops, PEP meetings, international conferences, study visits, and other activities. A shortlist of teams will be invited to present their proposals. Proposals may be submitted at any time.
The submission deadline for our 2007 meeting (to be held in Peru in May or June 2007) is 30 November 2006.
The Poverty and Economic Policy (PEP) Research Network brings together and provides support to developing-country researchers working to reduce poverty. The network receives funding from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) as part of its Globalization, Growth and Poverty (GGP) program.
Specific objectives are to:
Better understand the causes and consequences of poverty.
Propose alternative strategies, policies, and programs to reduce poverty.
Improve the monitoring and measurement of poverty.
Develop local research (and training) capacity in these areas.
Develop new concepts and methodologies through fundamental research. PEP is composed of three tightly linked constituent subnetworks:
Community-Based Monitoring Systems (CBMS) designs and pilots community-based monitoring and local development systems aimed at poverty in its multidimensional sense.
Poverty Monitoring, Measurement and Analysis (PMMA) aims to develop and apply analytical tools to monitor, measure, and understand poverty, and to analyze a wide range of poverty issues.
Modeling and Policy Impact Analysis (MPIA) uses economy-wide models as a “laboratory” to identify and analyze the links between specific policies and shocks and their eventual impacts on poverty. This call for research proposals concerns only the PMMA and MPIA subnetworks.
All team members must originate from and reside in a developing country during the course of the project. To maximize capacity building, we favour teams composed of a senior researcher supervising several less experienced researchers, including women researchers.
The PMMA network currently focuses primarily on multidimensional poverty, public spending/impact evaluation, and poverty dynamics. The poverty impacts of growth, public spending, and agricultural policies are priority themes for the MPIA network.
Both networks also offer a special Gender Challenge Fund for poverty studies on gender issues.
For more information and to submit a proposal, please consult the “Call for Proposals” on the PEP Web site: (www.pep-net.org).

[Butuh Info] Apakah lulusan Sarjana 1 tidak bisa melanjutkan sekolah di Jerm

mudah2an reply nya belum terlalu terlambat, maklum liburan lebaran ;)

Berikut isi suratnya saya kutipkan: >

Peace, social reconstruction and collective trauma in post-war Mozambique
This research project centers on the complex interplay of memory, collective trauma, social reconstruction, and poverty in the aftermath of the Mozambican civil war. The 1992 peace accord between the Mozambican government and the Renamo guerrilla force ended more than a decade of armed violence but did not bring nation-wide reconciliation, ethnic tolerance, full participatory citizenship, and overall economic prosperity. This project wants to analyze the impediments to such post-war reconstruction by focusing on the influence of collective trauma, enduring ethnic tensions, and social exclusion processes as intervening variables. The research will be conducted in Maputo, and consists of ethnographic research among foreign aid agencies, humanitarian organizations, and state- sponsored and informal organizations of war veterans and victim groups. This project runs parallel to a similar doctoral study on post-authoritarian rule in Chile.
